Event: Nova in Sagittarius: N Sgr 2020 No. 3 = PNV J17580848-300537
Discovered by: Shigehisa Fujikawa (Kan'onji, Kagawa, Japan) (via TOCP)
Discovery magnitude: unfiltered CCD magnitude mag 9.9 (using BN-51LN + f=120mm F/3.5 lens) (via TOCP)
Discovery date: 2020 July 16.51939 UT (via TOCP)
Coordinates (2000.0): R.A. 17 58 08.48 Decl. -30 05 37.6 (from VSX page for N Sgr 2020 No. 3)
Spectra: E. Aydi et al. (ATel #13872) report that high-resolution spectroscopy obtained on 2020 Jul. 16.97 UT using the High Resolution Spectrograph on the South African Large Telescope (SALT) indicates the object is a very fast Fe II classical nova.
Observing recommendations: Observations of all types (visual, CCD, DSLR, spectroscopy) and multiple bands as instrumentation permits are strongly encouraged as this nova evolves.
Observations reported to the AAVSO:
2020 Jul. 10.291 UT, <15.5 g (ASAS-SN Sky Patrol data; via P. Schmeer);
15.175, 10.48 g (ASAS-SN, confirming observation; via Schmeer);
15.3813, 9.5 band not specified (J. Seach, Grafton, NSW, Australia, using DSLR and 50 mm F/1.2 lens; via TOCP);
16.51939, 9.9 unfiltered CCD (S. Fujikawa, Kan'onji, Kagawa, Japan; discovery observation; via TOCP);
16.97222, 10.4 (L. Araujo, Pelotas, Brazil);
17.13542, 10.6 (A. Padilla Filho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil);
17.1494, 11.47 B (S. Kiyota, Kamagaya, Japan, remotely using 0.25-m f/3.4 Reflector + SBIG ST-10XME CCD (T5, iTelesciope.NET) at Mayhill, USA; via TOCP);
17.1494, 10.34 V (Kiyota; via TOCP);
17.1494, 7.91 Ic (Kiyota; via TOCP);
17.3011, 10.39 V +-0.02 (R. Modic, Willoughby, OH);
17.47361, 10.5 (A. Pearce, Nedlands, WA, Australia);
Charts: Charts with comparison stars for N Sgr 2020 No. 3 may be created using the AAVSO Variable Star Plotter (VSP). Be sure to include spaces in the name as shown. The field is very crowded, so please be careful inidentifying the nova, especially as it fades.
Submit observations: Please submit observations using the name N SGR 2020 NO. 3. When a GCVS name is assigned to this nova, please use it when submitting observations.
- Submit optical observations to the AAVSO International Database using WebObs (see below).
- Submit spectra to the AAVSO Spectroscopy Database (AVSpec).
Notes:
a. Designated PNV J17580848-3005376 when posted to the IAU Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams Transient Object Confirmation Page (TOCP).
b. P. Schmeer (Saarbruecken-Bischmisheim, Germany) reports no previous outbursts are seen in ASAS-SN Sky Patrol data since 2016 March 10. He also reports that a brightening seen the the ASAS-SN data on 2019 April 2.262 UT is very likely not real.
